SHANGHAI-LEKSIKON
Future cities

French postcard from 1900 showing air taxis in the year 2000. The magazine kiosk, the streetlights and the building with the air platform is in the art noveau style of the time and the people dress like 1900.

Street from a future city, the weekly magazine Hjemmet no. 50 1913. The houses are stylistically identical with the newly invented American ”skyscraper”. The bridges appear to be cast iron structures in the vein of the Eiffel Tower (build in 1889). Streetcars, cars and decorations are identical to what you would find in 1913.

The cover of Illustreret Familie-Journalen no. 12, 1920 is an imagined image of the New York of the future. The image is most likely British. Houses, planes and traffic looks like what could already be found in New York, but everything has gotten bigger, the front plane has three wings instead of two as was the norm at the time.

The caption reads:

The city of the future? At least, this is how the Americans imagine that the metropolis of the next generation will look. In other words, a New York expanded in heighth, width and scope, a labyrinth of skyscrapers compared to which those currently in existence are mere runts; deep canyons between the rows of buildings, where electic trains run in unbroken rows; streetcar rails on multiple levels above each other and on the roofs of the mammoth buildings landing spaces for flying machines in all shapes and sizes, which float like swallows through the clear summer sky above the anthill city. Is this what the cities out children will live in will look like? The future will tell.

The city of the future shown in Hjemmet no. 1, 1933. The skyscrapers have the angular look that was characteristic of the latest architecture in New York and Shanghai. The powerful searchlights had only just been adopted.

A future city from Superman no. 1, 1949. Here Batman is introduced to a Danish audience under his Swedish name Læderlappen. Together with Robin, Batman catches criminals in the hypermodern Gotham City's future city. But the criminals shoot like normal and Batman and Robin throws punches like normal. It's only the setup that's futuristic.
